Unearthing and explaining Portugal’s Wine Treasures
Portugal Wine Expert is the creation of wine writer and educator Fredrik Åkerman, a long‑time specialist in the wine country of Portugal, its grape varieties and wines. For more than three decades, Fredrik has explored Portugal’s diverse regions and producers, turning the language of its grapes into stories that wine lovers can relate to and enjoy.
His mission is simple: to increase the understanding and enjoyment of Portuguese wines through knowledge. Fredrik is a curious and engaging educator who is at his best when he shares his fascination for Portugal’s wines with others.
Fredrik’s journey into the world of wine began in 1992 with wine trade studies in London. His passion for Portuguese wines soon took root and grew into a career that has included work as an educator, lecturer, author, writer and organiser of wine tours.
In 2023 he published his first book, a comprehensive guide in Swedish to 103 grape varieties in Portugal. He is currently working on an English edition under the title “The Forgotten Grapes – The Wine Taster’s Complete Guide to 103 Grape Varieties in Portugal”, continuing his effort to highlight the lesser‑known sides of Portugal’s wine country.

An English edition under the title “The Forgotten Grapes – The Wine Taster’s Complete Guide to 103 Grape Varieties in Portugal” is in the works and will be announced once it is ready.

For his knowledge, Fredrik Åkerman has been honoured to act as a judge in national wine competitions in Portugal, including the Wines of Portugal Challenge and the Essência do Vinho Top 10.
